About Us
WOSDEC is the West of Scotland Development Education Centre and is one of six development education centres (DECs) in Scotland. The others are in Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen, Dingwall and Coatbridge. We are based in Glasgow, and offer support to develop education for global citizenship in the local authorities of West Dunbartonshire, East and West Renfrewshire and Glasgow.
Most of our income is dependent on grant funding from organisations such as Oxfam and Department for International Development for particular projects and core work. We also generate funds through services such as CPD courses which we run throughout west central Scotland.
Much of our work is done collaboratively through the Scottish network, IDEAS (International Development Education Association of Scotland) a network of over 40 organisations and individuals involved in Development Education and Education for Global Citizenship across Scotland.
We currently have one full time member of staff - Lynn Baxendale (Global Education Worker) and two part time, Carol Clark (Administrator) and Diana Ellis (Global Education Worker). Policy is determined by a voluntary Management Committee comprising a representative from each of our core funders and a number of co-opted members, mainly teachers. Membership of the Management Committee is open to anyone in our local area with a professional and/or personal interest in our work and who lives or works in our local area.
What is Development Education?
Development Education is an active learning process that aims to:
- enable people to understand the links between their own lives and those of people throughout the world
- increase understanding of the economic, social, political and environmental forces that shape our lives
- develop skills, attitudes, and values that enable people to work together to bring about change and take control of their own lives
- contribute to the development of a more just and more sustainable world, in which power and resources are more equitably shared.
