Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
We offer the following active, participatory workshop sessions either through your local authority or directly to your school. For CPDs this term see our CPD Diary.

1. Developing Literacy and Thinking Skills through Global Citizenship – 2 twilight sessions
Aims:
- To introduce participants to the key elements of Global Citizenship and how they contribute to the purposes of CfE
- To investigate techniques for developing critical thinking skills within listening and reading
- To examine different practical methods for developing informed views for talking and writing
Content:
This two part course will briefly explore the key concepts of Global Citizenship and how they contribute to the experiences and outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence. Participants will explore a number of active learning strategies for developing thinking skills within literacy in the context of Global Citizenship.

2. Exploring Climate Change in Upper Primary – twilight CPD session
Aim:
- To identify the CfE Experiences and Outcomes that will be met by investigating Climate Change as an inter-disciplinary Level 2 topic
- To examine different active learning techniques and resources for exploring Climate Change
- To consider how we can support pupils in the sustainable development of their schools, homes and communities.
Content:
This participatory two part course explores the key concepts of Climate Change education and how they contribute to the experiences and outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence. Participants will try out a number of active learning techniques and consider how to ensure the sustainability of the teaching and learning involved.

3. Exploring Climate Change in S1/S2 – twilight CPD session
Aim:
- To identify the CfE Experiences and Outcomes that will be met by investigating Climate Change as Level 3 topic
- To examine different active learning techniques and resources for exploring Climate Change either as an inter-disciplinary project week or within subject areas.
- To consider how we can support pupils in the sustainable development of their schools, homes and communities.

This participatory two part course explores the key concepts of Climate Change education and how they contribute to the experiences and outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence. Participants will try out a number of active learning techniques and consider how to ensure the sustainability of the teaching and learning involved.
4. Using Topical Issues to Develop the 4 Capacities of CfE – 2 twilight sessions
This participatory course of 2 twilight sessions will build teachers’ confidence in using topical global issues in the classroom to develop critical thinking and attitudes important to the purposes and outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence.
5. Global Citizenship – Resources and Approaches - Primary / Secondary
This course aims to enhance teachers’ understanding of the key elements of Global Citizenship and how they contribute to the purposes of Curriculum for Excellence. It offers opportunities to explore methodologies, classroom activities and resources for developing Global Citizenship in the curriculum.
6. Developing Critical Thinking Skills for Curriculum for Excellence through Global Citizenship
This 2 part twilight course builds on teachers’ understanding of Global Citizenship. It aims to explore participatory methodologies and activities for developing critical thinking using global citizenship themes and values.
7. Fair Trade – ideas and resources for the classroom
Building on teachers’ understanding of fair trade, this session will provide practical strategies for teaching theses issues.
8. Introducing Global Citizenship in the Nursery School
This course provides an opportunity to explore what we mean by Global Citizenship and to learn practical strategies and tools to embed it in the nursery school.
9. Building Successful School Partnerships
This twilight session explores some of the ways school partnerships can contribute to the global dimension of education. It looks at the pitfalls as wells as the essential elements of successful school partnerships. It sign posts useful sources of information and guidance.
10. Getting to Grips with Global Citizenship in Primary Schools
This is a four-part twilight course aimed at whole school staff development. It will develop your school’s knowledge, skills and understanding of Global Citizenship and embed it in your development of Curriculum for Excellence. The four sessions can be run to suit participants but ideally will have around 3 weeks between each workshop to allow time for participants to try out activities and reflect on each session. The sessions are designed to be practical in nature and fully participatory. There are participant resource packs to go with each session and additional teaching resources, will be available on free loan.
