TEACHERS DOING IT FOR THEMSELVES

This new project will work with a group of Renfrewshire teachers to embed global citizenship within their learning and teaching, and will enable them to become peer mentors. It will also allow Renfrewshire teachers to meet to share 'global learning' experiences and build an informal network. Please do get in touch if you are interested.

GLOBAL STORYLINES

WOSDEC, Glasgow City Council and Strathclyde University are also embarking on an exciting 3 year joint partnership project to create storylines which will explore Global Citizenship themes. Seven pilot schools have been invited to work with us in developing the storyline frameworks, trialing in classes, reflecting and evaluating.

DEVELOPING A NEW WORLD

TeachersThis exciting project allows a group of primary teachers to consider Glasgow museum collections as a stimulus for exploring topical global issues with children. It develops creative enquiry-based teaching and learning opportunities to enable children to achieve many of the ‘Curriculum for Excellence’ outcomes.

Our group of Glasgow primary teachers have been working away on their frameworks for exploring global issues using objects from the Glasgow Museums as stimuli. This term they will pilot the new projects with their classes, carrying out baseline and follow-up monitoring and evaluation, in order to gauge attitudinal change. The project pilots include:

Our Water, Our World - Exploring sustainable development through outdoor learning, using the Forth and Clyde canal as content focus and working in partnership with local community organisations including Waterways Trust, Maryhill Burgh halls, Kelvingrove Museum and Parks and RSPB (St Charles Primary, first level CfE).

Tea – from Plantation to Pot Exploring the tea trade through the Thomas Lipton connection with the Gorbals.Investigating wants and needs in UK and Sri Lanka, comparing lives and examining trade justice, working in partnership with Glasgow Museum’s Resource Centre (Blackfriars Primary and Jordanhill Primary, second level CfE).

The Clyde past and present -  Exploring the geography of the Clyde, the history of trade from the Clyde including the triangular slave trade, Glasgow’s position as the second city of the empire, and the effects of globalisation, working in partnership with the People’s Palace (Carmyle Primary, second level CfE).

How are our basic needs met around the world?  - Exploring wants and needs and relating to the UNCRC. Examining issues of identity, particularly what it means to be Scottish. Looking at the commonalities in children’s lives around the world (Swinton Primary first level CfE, Garnetbank Primary second level CfE).

We will be looking for new teachers to build on this work in Year 2 of the project (academic year 2010/2011). Should you be interested in getting involved, please email diana.wosdec@btconnect.com

INITIAL TEACHER EDUCATION PROJECT

Making Connections

The 'Taking a Global Approach to Initial Teacher Education (ITE) initiative is bringing together interested parties from each of the Teacher Education Institutions across Scotland, members of IDEAS and key stakeholders within education in order to build on previous and current work within ITE to establish the concepts and principles of Global Citizenship/Sustainable Development at the heart of Scottish Initial Teacher Education. In so doing, we hope that this initiative will better prepare teachers to effectively engage with the values, purposes and principles of a Curriculum for Excellence. embedding Education for Global CitizenshipThe project aims to take a holistic, inclusive approach to embedding Education for Global Citizenship/Sustainable Development across the curriculum, enabling teacher educators and student teachers to make the connections both across the curriculum and between local and global issues. The project will support networking, capacity-building and research between Teacher Education Institutions in relation to Education for Global Citizenship/Sustainable Development and will work to highlight many of the innovative approaches that are currently being demonstrated within initial teacher education.

If you are interested in finding out more about this project, would like to become involved or would like to be included in the project mailing list please visit the new project website at www.global-approach.org.uk.

‘Taking a Global Approach to Initial Teacher Education’ Annual Conference

IDEAS ‘Taking a Global Approach to Initial Teacher Education’ Annual Conference took place on 20th August 2009 at Stirling University Management Centre. It drew together an influential group of ITE practitioners, education policy makers and NGO representatives, all working to make Global Citizenship and Sustainable Development (EGCSD) an integral part of the education of all student teachers in Scotland’s universities. Opening the conference, Keith Brown, Minister for Schools and Skills, endorsed the importance of this area of Scottish education and gave his support to the project. He stressed that EGCSD is not an optional extra but an essential theme that should be embedded ‘in many, if not all, subjects taught in our schools'.  To view a report on the conference click here and to see some more pictures click here.
