INITIAL TEACHER EDUCATION PROJECT

Making Connections

The 'Taking a Global Approach to Initial Teacher Education (ITE) initiative is bringing together interested parties from each of the Teacher Education Institutions across Scotland, members of IDEAS and key stakeholders within education in order to build on previous and current work within ITE to establish the concepts and principles of Global Citizenship/Sustainable Development at the heart of Scottish Initial Teacher Education. In so doing, we hope that this initiative will better prepare teachers to effectively engage with the values, purposes and principles of a Curriculum for Excellence.

The project aims to take a holistic, inclusive approach to embedding Education for Global CitizenshipThe project aims to take a holistic, inclusive approach to embedding Education for Global Citizenship/Sustainable Development across the curriculum, enabling teacher educators and student teachers to make the connections both across the curriculum and between local and global issues. The project will support networking, capacity-building and research between Teacher Education Institutions in relation to Education for Global Citizenship/Sustainable Development and will work to highlight many of the innovative approaches that are currently being demonstrated within initial teacher education.

‘Taking a Global Approach to Initial Teacher Education’ Annual Conference

IDEAS ‘Taking a Global Approach to Initial Teacher Education’ Annual Conference took place on 20th August 2009 at Stirling University Management Centre. It drew together an influential group of ITE practitioners, education policy makers and NGO representatives, all working to make Global Citizenship and Sustainable Development (EGCSD) an integral part of the education of all student teachers in Scotland’s universities. Opening the conference, Keith Brown, Minister for Schools and Skills, endorsed the importance of this area of Scottish education and gave his support to the project. He stressed that EGCSD is not an optional extra but an essential theme that should be embedded ‘in many, if not all, subjects taught in our schools'.  To view a report on the conference click here and to see some more pictures click here.

DEVELOPING A NEW WORLD

This exciting project allows a group of primary teachers to consider Glasgow museum collections as a stimulus for exploring topical global issues with children. It develops creative enquiry-based teaching and learning opportunities to enable children to achieve many of the ‘Curriculum for Excellence’ outcomes.

TeachersOur group of Glasgow primary teachers met again at WOSDEC before Christmas 2009. They continue to work on the learning frameworks for exploring Global Citizenship themes using collections from the Glasgow Museums. Pairs are collaborating on joint projects including:

- Water and Sustainable Communities

- Fairtrade

- Sustainable Development in Glasgow

We will be looking for new teachers to build on this work in Year 2 of the project (academic year 2010/2011). Should you be interested in getting involved, please email diana.wosdec@btconnect.com for information.
