Mohammed's Journey - A Refugee Diary

Told from the point of view of a 15 year old Kurdish boy, this reference book traces his family’s persecution in and escape from Iraq in the 1990’s. The style is conversational with a mixture of illustrated and photographic images, while the tone is personal and reflective. Mohammed’s family endure an arduous journey from Iraq through Turkey and finally, integration as UK citizens. There are facts about the Iraqi conflict and Saddam’s dictatorship at the end. This would be a good book to introduce pupils to conflict, refugees and global interdependence.

Power Down, Save Energy Be the Solution (Primary)

A cross-curricular toolkit aimed at upper primary pupils, focussing on energy use at home and at school, and how this is linked to the lives of real children in Kenya, Uganda, Bangladesh and India. A set of 22 A4 thought provoking colour cards showing the causes and impacts of climate change can be used to form the basis of 10 lessons. Activities start from what children already know and want to find out and build up from there. Clearly laid out facts and solution based activities.
